Germany’s Merz says defence spending counters Putin’s ‘war against Europe’

German chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz said Tuesday that his proposed huge spending boost for defence was needed because of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ‘war of aggression against Europe’.
